DAF system price in Africa: what determines cost?

A DAF system price cannot be compared honestly from a flow rate alone. Two plants at the same m³/h can differ materially in cost because the wastewater, final discharge target, materials, automation, shipping scope and sludge-handling duty are different. A good quotation makes those differences visible rather than hiding them behind one headline number.

Direct answer

The DAF unit is only one part of the project cost. The price is driven first by flow and wastewater variability; then by whether the scope needs equalisation, pH correction, chemical dosing, solids removal, a biological stage, polishing, installation and sludge handling. A low equipment price can become the expensive option if those items are omitted.

DAF price comparison: what should be in scope?

  • Process design basis: influent quality, design flow, target, chemical assumptions and stated performance boundary.
  • DAF package: flotation tank, contact zone, skimmer, sludge removal, recycle pump, saturator, air system, pipework and valves.
  • Pre-treatment: screening, equalisation, pH correction, coagulant/polymer preparation and dosing where required.
  • Controls: panel, VFDs, instrumentation, alarms and any PLC/HMI/remote-access scope.
  • Sludge scope: hopper, pumping, thickening/dewatering interface and planned disposal route.
  • Project scope: drawings, manuals, factory testing, packing, shipping basis, installation, commissioning, operator training and spares.

If a quotation does not state these items, it is not yet a system price. It is an incomplete equipment price. That can be appropriate for an experienced EPC contractor who will supply the missing scope, but it should never be confused with a turnkey comparison.

Avoid these three pricing mistakes

  • Pricing against average flow only: an undersized plant fails during CIP, wash-down or batch-release peaks. Equalisation may be cheaper than building every downstream item for the peak, but it must be included deliberately.
  • Assuming DAF removes all COD: it removes the floatable and coagulated share. Use filtered COD to identify whether a biological stage is needed before a final discharge guarantee is discussed.
  • Comparing ex-works equipment to an installed treatment plant: always separate equipment, freight, duties/taxes, civil works, electrical/mechanical installation, commissioning and training.

What is included in a DAF system price?

A complete scope normally identifies the DAF tank, saturator/recycle system, chemical dosing, controls, documentation and stated logistics terms. It should separately identify equalisation, civil works, installation, sludge handling, commissioning and any biological or polishing stage.

Can I get a price without a wastewater analysis?

Yes, for a preliminary budget based on an assumed duty. A firm performance and equipment proposal needs representative wastewater results and the final discharge target; otherwise the treatment scope may be wrong.

Why are two DAF quotations for the same flow different?

They may cover different materials, process equipment, controls, logistics, design loading, chemical scope or project boundaries. Compare the design basis and inclusions line by line before comparing totals.

Does a lower DAF price mean lower operating cost?

Not necessarily. Chemical dosing, power, sludge volume, maintenance access, instrumentation and the degree of automation drive operating cost. A lower initial price can create higher chemical use, downtime or compliance risk.
